Dietrich Graf von Schweinitz has been practicing acupuncture since 1986, mainly on horses. He has published original work from his research in thermographic monitoring of acupuncture patients and has been actively involved in promoting veterinary acupuncture as Education Director and Past President of the Association of Veterinary Acupuncturists and on the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society Board of Directors and Education Committee. In practice we use acupuncture as part of everyday equine health management - a complimentary medicine that is sometimes used with conventional treatment to aid in the body's ability to regain health and reduce the requirements for medications; and sometimes used without the use of medications - esp. in performance horses where medications are prohibited in competition. While most acupuncture is aimed at treating chronic pain conditions it can also be very helpful in other chronic diseases including respiratory and abdominal problems (e.g. Recurrent Airway Disease and Spasmodic Colics). Dietrich's most famous patient has been Supreme Rock, Olympic Eventer, European and twice Badminton Champion. Dietrich acupunctured "Rocky" throughout his career and was even flown to Sydney by Rocky's owners to acupuncture him prior to his Team Silver Olympic performance.
